Before Your Rotation Begins
1. Provide the items below at least one month before the rotation begins:
- Badge photo compliant with requirements (PDF)
- Application for Temporary Student Parking and IMS (PDF)
- Signed Acknowledgement of Orientation Form (PDF)
- Review UPMC Hamot orientation materials before signing this form
- Library brochure (PDF)

- Exhibit B: UPMC Student Confidentiality Agreement (PDF)
- Pennsylvania State Clearances (PDF): Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73
- All clearances must be current (obtained within the last three years)
- Third-party background checks do not satisfy the requirement
- Processing can take up to four to six weeks, so please allow time to receive your results
- Letter of good standing
- Certificate of liability insurance
- Proof of health insurance coverage
- Verification of HIPAA/standard precautions and CPR
- Flu shot verification record
- Updated health and immunization records as well as documentation of:
- Blood work verifying immunity to varicella, rubella, rubeola and mumps
- Results of a Mantoux PPD test for tuberculosis within the current year (or two tests within 30 days of each other if a Mantoux test has never been done or if it was not done the previous year)
- Proof of a Tdap vaccination, after 2005, with the Adacel vaccine

Day One of Your Rotation
Parking Information
- When you arrive at UPMC Hamot for your rotation, convenient fee-based parking is available in the public parking garage located at the corner of Third and State Streets (entrance on Third Street).
- As an alternative, the Intermodal Center, located at 208 E. Bayfront Parkway offers free parking and you must take the EMTA shuttle to utilize this parking lot.
- A parking lot is also located between 4th and 5th Streets on Holland that students are permitted to use. You must park in the back half of this lot, as the front is reserved for Erie Insurance employees.

There are administrative tasks you must complete prior to starting your rotation:

- Report to UPMC Hamot Graduate Medical Education office at 7:30 a.m. to retrieve your badge and parking permit. The GME office is located at 100 State Street, Suite 320.
- If you are using UPMC Hamot student housing, you will submit the signed housing form and $10 deposit at this time.
2. Complete EpicCare computer training
- You will need to complete this training on your first day. It must be done on a UPMC computer. The student lounge is a possible location for this to be completed.
This training must be completed before you are able to use Epic on your rotation.
3. Complete Cerner training modules:

4. Report for your rotation:
- Report to the UPMC Hamot Heart and Vascular Institute, 120 E. 2nd Street, Erie, PA, Phone: 814-877-9751.

3. Once these tasks are completed, report for your rotation
- To report for your first scheduled shift, use the main ED patient entrance on French Street. Wear your school ID badge and your Hamot access badge. Identify yourself as a medical student to the triage desk. Let them know you are beginning your first day on rotation and need to meet with the resident/attending you're working with that shift (whose name will be sent to you in advance.)
4. Expectations During Rotation
- You will be given a QR code that links to an evaluation on you in advance of your rotation. During:
- Week 1 and 2: Ask at least 2-3 residents and 1-2 attendings to provide feedback using the QR code.
- Week 2/3: Ask Dr. Erik Iszkula (iszkulaer@upmc.edu) to provide a brief mid-rotation check-in assessment to let you know how you’re doing and offer suggestions for improvement (if any).
- Week 3 and 4: Request an additional 1-2 residents and 1 attending to complete the evaluation using the QR code.
- You are expected to present at resident lecture and take an end-of-rotation exam.
- It is recommended that you put the QR code on your presentation and ask for feedback on that as well.
- Your student presentation, end-of-rotation exam score, and feedback factor into your summative evaluation and grade. Read more here (PDF).

3. Complete EpicCare computer training
- You will need to complete this trainingon the first day of your rotation. It must be done on a UPMC computer. The student lounge is a possible location for this to be completed.
This training must be completed before you are able to use Epic on your rotation.

5. Rotation Information
- The Office Manager or the OP Nurse Coordinator from Great Lakes Surgical Specialists will contact you with information about your rotation before you arrive.

- At 10:00 a.m., report to the Radiology front desk at UPMC Hamot by walking through the main lobby and following the signs for Radiology. (The Security/Information desk in the main lobby can point you towards this department.) When you arrive in Radiology, check in at the front desk, identify yourself as a medical student there to begin rotation with Dr. Yost.

- Report to the Magee-Women's, UPMC Hamot hospital. Present yourself as a medical student beginning rotation in the NICU to the Security Desk

- You will receive a resident's contact information by email prior to your rotation start date. Once all of your administrative tasks are completed, you may contact the resident and inquire where you should meet them.

3. Attend St. Vincent Health Center orientation as scheduled
4. Once these tasks are completed, report for your rotation as directed in your welcome email
5. Complete EpicCare computer training
- You will need to complete this training on your first day. It must be done on a UPMC computer. The student lounge is a possible location for this to be completed.
6. Before your second day begins, complete Cerner training modules:

- Report to the Wound Center, 215 Holland St., Erie, PA. Phone 814-877-3018.
Arrive at the Wound Center at 12:15 pm on Monday morning. At the front desk, introduce yourself and explain you are a medical student there to begin a rotation.

Helpful Tips & Information
Badge Access
The badge issued to you by Human Resources will allow you to enter restricted areas of the hospital relevant for your specific rotation. Please allow 24-36 hours for badge access to be activated. Contact Autumn Geiger if you do not have badge access after that time.
Student Lounge
There is a lounge for medical students located in the sub-basem*nt. Lockers are available to students for storing their belongings (please bring your own lock.) The lounge also has computers with network access, phones, a printer, a microwave, and a refrigerator.
Dining On-Campus
- UPMC Hamot Dining Room
- Located on the ground floor in the North Complex of the hospital
- Great views of Presque Isle Bay
- Open for breakfast and lunch (6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
- Lobby Cafe
- Located in the main lobby of the hospital
- Open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
- Kern's Cafe
- Located in the lobby of the Magee-Womens, UPMC Hamot hospital
- Open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Library
The medical library is located on the Basem*nt Level in the west corridor of the main hospital. Turn left off the North Complex elevators, and the library is down the hall, through the doors, on the right. Follow the signs.
End-of-Rotation Responsibilities
At the end of your rotation, you must complete the following tasks:
- Return the Hamot badge and, if applicable, your housing keys to UPMC Hamot Security Office (sub-basem*nt level of main hospital, North Complex, staffed 24/7).
- If applicable, return the textbook, pager, and laptop to UPMC Hamot GME Office (100 State Street, Suite 320) open Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
